“Launching the national campaign to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate”
**Ibra, May 29 /Oman News Agency/ -** The Health Symposium on Organ Donation, organized by the
General Directorate of Health Services in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, reviewed the National
Program for Organ Donation and Transplantation, and Donation from a religious perspective.
Dr. Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Saadi, the Director-General of Health in North Al Sharqiyah, stated in his
speech, "This seminar aims to introduce the National Organ Donation and Transplantation Program,
recognizing its importance as one of the most complex and challenging healthcare fields. It presents
significant challenges for health systems, requiring coordination among various authorities and experts
to address and find solutions."
He pointed out that the program aims to achieve the established principles in the field of organ
transplantation and contribute to the development of clinical scientific research. It also works on
implementing the recommendations of the Organ Transplantation Technical Committee. Al-Saadi
confirmed that the National Program proposes initial standards for the transplantation process,
mechanisms for supervision and inspection of medical practices in this field, and a plan to enhance
societal awareness of the importance of organ donation and instill the concept of organ donation will.
The symposium included the presentation of four working papers. The first paper introduced the
National Organ Transplantation Program, while the second paper discussed organ Donation from a
religious perspective. The third paper addressed brain death, and the fourth paper focused on kidney
dialysis and the importance of kidney donation. The seminar concluded with a visual presentation on the
experience of both donors and recipients.
It is worth mentioning that the number of people who registered their will as an organ donor after
death in the "Shifa" application under the Ministry of Health in the Sultanate of Oman has reached 8,000
donors so far. The total number of organ transplant operations in Oman since 1988 is approximately
360, including 332 kidney transplant operations involving 311 living donors and 21 deceased donors.
Additionally, liver transplantation reached 28, all from living donors.
The symposium activities were under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Ali bin Ahmed Al Shamsi,
