His Excellency Dr. Hilal Ali Al Sabti, Minister of Health, met today (Monday) a number of students from South Ash Sharqiyah schools in a panel discussion, supervised by UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, held at South Ash Sharqiyah Governor Office.
Aiming at understanding the perspectives and opinions of the younger generation on contemporary issues, the Minister of health discussed with students their views on children's rights in terms of health, and listened to their enquiries and suggestions regarding the healthcare services provided to them.
Moreover, the event emphasized the necessity of strengthening and activating the role of youth towards environmental and climate issues through engaging them in the development of projects and initiatives with innovative solutions in order to reduce the risks of climate change.
H.E. Dr. Yahya Badr Al Maawali, Governor of South Ash Sharqiyah, pointed out that this interactive discussion is held in recognition of World Children's Day, emphasizing that such meetings grant the children the right to express their opinions on various legislative and rights-related aspects, as they are key partners in decision-making.
The Governor of South Ash Sharqiyah stressed the importance of creating a suitable environment for children, supported by appropriate legislation and necessary resources along with prioritizing investment in children's education, their care, health, and awareness of their rights. He added that by promoting their self-confidence, independence and responsibility, children would then be capable of creativity and innovation, contributing to elevating the nation’s name in all forums. Dr. Al Maawali also put emphasis on the importance of instilling values of loyalty, citizenship, and encouraging virtuous ethics.
From her part, H.E. Sumaira Chowdhury, Representative of UNICEF Office in Oman, stated: "These dialogue sessions among students and decision-makers present a valuable opportunity for participation in shaping the discussions that will define their world. Listening to their voices provides them with the motivation to play a decisive role in building a world that reflects their aspirations, values, and potential."
It is worth noting that the Sultanate of Oman is one of the leading countries supporting UNICEF's efforts by implementing international laws to protect children's rights and advocating for their assistance in meeting their basic needs and expanding the opportunities available to them in order to reach their fullest potential. The core principles of the convention on the Rights of the Child include non-discrimination; collective efforts for the best interests of the child; the right to life, survival, and development; and the right to respect the child's opinion. Each of the rights outlined in the convention is intrinsically linked to the child's dignity and harmonious development.
The convention protects children's rights by setting standards for healthcare, education, social services, and civil and legal services related to the child. By agreeing to adhere to these rights, governments commit themselves to protecting and guaranteeing children's rights and assume responsibility for this commitment before the international community. The convention requires the countries that are parties to it to develop and implement all their actions and policies in light of the best interests of the child.
