The Global Policy Group (GPG) meeting organized by the World Health Organization (WHO)commenced today in al-Bustan Palace Hotel, hosted for the first time by the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Health. The meeting attended by the WHO Director General H.E. Dr. Margret Chan, along with her deputy and regional directors of the six WHO regions.
The meeting is expected to discuss different issues related to health and global policies, financial and administrative reforms, and explore the many updates in the international health affairs and medical emergencies techniques. An update on the Oman Health Vision 2050 will be presented which draw a clear road map for the next 35 years that anticipates the changing situation in health, socioeconomic status as well as the population demand.
On behalf of the Ministry of Health, H.E. Dr. Ali bin Taleb al-Hinai, Undersecretary of Ministry of Health for Planning Affairs in his speech said: (Today Oman is hosting the Global Policy Group, but this time with special flavour, having all WHO senior management presence. Oman is virtually hosting the representatives of 194 member states worldwide).
His Excellency added that: (Hosting all these esteemed meetings, conferences and other important events were not a matter of chance. It is due to the international recognition that Oman has made remarkable progress in health and socio-economic development in a peaceful environment under the leadership and wisdom of his Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said).
In her speech, the WHO Director General Dr. Chan praised the Government of the Sultanate for hosting this important Global Policy Group (GPG) meeting, as well as the hospitality accorded to the GPG since their arrival to Muscat. Dr. Chan stressed on the cooperation between the Sultanate and the WHO, she pointed out on the vital role played by Oman in the works of the WHO. The Director General pointed out that she had an opportunity of visiting Oman in the year 2012 for the inauguration of the conference related to the Health Document for the Health Vision 2050, which is now completed.
Dr. Chan concluded by praising the efforts played by the Sultanate in the health field which resulted a significant development in all health indicators, as well as the citizen’s health condition.
It is worth mentioning that, the WHO is one of the specialized agencies affiliated to the United Nations (UN) and administratively independent, which is consist of 194 member States. WHO has its governing bodies (World Health Assembly, The Executive Board, Regional Committees.
