The Spine Unit team at Khawla Hospital has succeeded in performing the first MAGnetic Expansion Control (MAGEC) Grow Rod surgery in the Sultanate of Oman for an Omani child with scoliosis.
In the four-hour surgery, magnetic rods were attached along the length of the patient’s spine. After implementation, the lengthening is achieved non-invasively by using magnetic external remote control every three months in the clinic.
MAGEC procedure marks a qualitative leap in the treatment of scoliosis in children as it controls and prevents associated complications on vital organs, while avoiding repeated surgical procedures.
Previously, all patients suffering from the same type of scoliosis had to seek treatment abroad due to the unavailability of such procedures in the country.
Additionally, in another condition and for the first time, the hospital team succeeded in removing disc from the nerve canal using minimally invasive endoscopic surgery without spinal fusion, unlike the traditional methods that requires spinal fusion.
The introduction of endoscopic spine surgery in the day care unit at Khawla Hospital reduces waiting lists and contributes to the rapid recovery of patients, enabling them to return to their normal lives.
