The Directorate General of Khoula Hospital, represented by Khoula and Al Nahdha Hospitals, today (Monday) marked the eighth World Patient Safety Day and the ninth Omani Patient Safety Day at Al Nahdha Hospital. The event was held under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Saeed bin Harib Al-Lamki, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health for Health Affairs.
Dr. Ahmed Sadiq Al-Sajwani, Senior Consultant and Head of the Internal Medicine Department at Al Nahdha Hospital, addressed in a lecture the importance of tackling non-communicable diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases, and the challenges they pose to health systems amid the need for long-term care and continuous follow-up.
The lecture highlighted the importance of shifting from a focus on treating complications to adopting an integrated approach centered on prevention, early detection, and timely intervention, alongside raising health awareness, reducing modifiable risk factors, and integrating healthcare services.
Al-Sajwani also addressed the importance of investing in prevention and strengthening the safety of care, thereby contributing to reducing the burden of disease, improving health outcomes, and supporting the efficiency of the healthcare sector and the sustainability of its services.
It is worth noting that this year’s celebration was held under the theme “Safe Care for Non-Communicable Diseases”, underscoring the importance of integrating patient safety principles throughout the various stages of the care journey for people living with non-communicable diseases, from prevention and early detection through diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, to empowering patients and strengthening their role as active partners in their own care.
The celebration featured a range of awareness-raising and educational activities, along with an accompanying exhibition, with the participation of various departments and healthcare specialties from Khoula and Al Nahdha Hospitals. The activities highlighted safe practices in the management of non-communicable diseases, the importance of prevention and reducing risk factors, medication safety, regular follow-up, and strengthening communication and partnership between patients and healthcare teams.
The accompanying awareness exhibition aimed to raise community awareness of safe health practices and encourage individuals to adopt healthy choices that contribute to preventing non-communicable diseases and reducing their complications. It also sought to reinforce the concept of shared responsibility for the safety of healthcare.
The Directorate General of Khoula Hospital affirmed that marking this occasion reflects its ongoing institutional commitment to making patient safety a core priority in the delivery of healthcare services, fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement, and supporting the participation of patients and their families throughout the various stages of care.
These efforts are supported by the Directorate General of Khoula Hospital, led by Dr. Rashid Al-Alawi, Director General, as part of the Directorate’s efforts to develop safer, more efficient, and more patient-centered healthcare services that respond to patients’ needs.
The occasion also underscored that patient safety is a shared responsibility, and that prevention, awareness, and active partnerships among healthcare institutions, healthcare professionals, patients, and the community are fundamental pillars for enhancing the quality of healthcare and achieving sustainable health outcomes.
