MOH Conducts HIV in Primary Health Care Workshop
A two-day workshop on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Primary Health Care began today (Tuesday) at the Higher Institute of Health Specialties.
The workshop, organized by the Ministry of Health (MoH) represented by the Directorate General for Disease Surveillance & Control, department of Communicable Diseases, gathered around 80 PCH Physicians from the Sultanate’s public and private institutions.
Dr. Saif Al Abri, Director General of Disease Surveillance & Control attended the commencement of the workshop where he delivered a speech marking the significance role of primary health care and physicians played in the diagnosis of HIV and patient care being the first receiver of the patients.
The training workshop aimed at strengthening the role of primary health care physicians in HIV diagnosis, exanimation, and treatment since early detection is critical in the treatment and follow up of the disease at its first phases; therefore reducing the possibility of transmission as well as allowing HIV patient to lead a normal life without symptoms or stigma and discrimination.
The workshop highlights for two days spectrum of topics throughout three sessions allocating the first day (Tuesday) for Public sector physicians and second day (Wednesday) for private sector physicians.
HIV nature, diagnosis, treatment methods will be addressed. Moreover, the workshop will identify the potential role for primary care physicians in HIV care and list the indications of HIV testing in primary health care. The workshop additionally will discuss management of non-communicable diseases in PLHIV and Drug- Drug Interaction. Future plan and way forward in HIV care will be further underlined.
By the end of the workshop, it is hoped that the participants will be able to describe the HIV epidemiology, natural history, testing models and treatment.
