The Sultanate of Oman hosted yesterday (Tuesday) a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that discussed means of strengthening Infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS).
In recent years, the Sultanate of Oman has achieved a prominent international presence and leadership in health through participation in various active global health initiatives. The Ministry of Health, under the direct supervision and follow-up of His Excellency Dr. Hilal Ali Al Sabti, is working diligently to support this international presence.
The side-event aimed to engage leaderships during UNGA high-level meeting for AMR and advocate for commitment to synergistic implementation of IPC and AMS programs as highly cost-effective interventions for effective control of AMR at local and global levels.
Moreover, the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance, led by Oman, aimed at sharing successful country experiences and results on developing strong policy frameworks and systems for implementation and monitoring of IPC and AMR programs, discussing how to use the agreed upon SMART and feasible national and global indicators and targets to track progress and facilitate accountability on these two key priorities of AMR action plan.
The Sultanate of Oman’s delegation in this event was chaired by H.E. Sayyid Bader Hamad Al Busaidi, the Foreign Minister, with the presence of H.E. Dr. Ahmed Salem Al Mandhari, MOH’s Undersecretary for Planning and Health Regulation, along with the accompanying delegation. Ministers and heads of delegation attended the event in addition to key technical experts in the field.
H.E Sayyid Bader Hamed Al Busaidi, the Foreign Minister delivered the welcome address on behalf of the Sultanate of Oman.
Following the opening session, a scientific forum featuring experiences from the Sultanate of Oman, the WHO, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Germany, Nigeria, and the United States Center for Disease Control was held. The forum covered a range of technical matters including country experiences, global and regional situations of IPC and AMR indicators, cost-effectiveness of IPC and establishing legal frameworks as a way to push the agenda forward.
