Proceeding from the significance of coping with the latest diagnostic and therapeutic techniques followed on the international level, the Royal Hospital (RH) accomplished an extraordinary achievement in the field of adrenal gland tumor surgery that is considered the first-of-its-kind in the Sultanate. The medical team succeeded in removing a left adrenal gland tumor by performing a new laparoscopic operation called Retroperitoneoscopic Adrenalectomy. This approach enable the removal of the tumor from the back.
The first case of Retroperitoneoscopic Adrenalectomy in Oman and probably in the GCC was performed to a young man of 34 years of age who had a difficulty to control high blood pressure for about 6 months. He was on 4 types of drugs to control his Blood pressure and his blood tests showed very high Aldosterone and low potassium in Blood. The CT scan and MRI Abdomen showed a 2cms-sized tumor called Adenoma in the left adrenal gland. The Endocrine surgical team led by Dr Riyaz Ahmed, Senior Consultant and Head Of Endocrine Team at the Royal Hospital performed the Retroperitoneoscopic Left adrenalectomy successfully. Patient’s Blood pressure came under control and his Aldosterone levels in the blood dropped to normal.
Speaking on this therapeutic technique, Dr. Riyaz Ahmed declared that this approach has many Advantages compared to the other traditional therapeutic interventions that were performed through the abdomen. Advantages can be seen in various areas as the Retroperitoneoscopic Adrenalectomy takes less than an hour, pain part is much less, in addition that the patient can go home next morning and practice his normal life after two days.
