In a groundbreaking milestone that reflects the continuous advancement of Oman’s healthcare sector, the Royal Hospital has successfully performed the nation’s first surgery using a robotic system, a remarkable achievement that positions Oman among the regional pioneers in smart surgical technologies.
The success marks the culmination of years of planning, training, and the adoption of cutting-edge global innovations in surgery. The introduction of the surgical robot at RH represents a qualitative leap in specialized medical services and aligns with Oman’s Vision 2040.
Dr. Qais bin Mohammed Al Hooti, Consultant Urologist at RH, explained that the operation “was performed using one of the most advanced robotic surgery systems, offering surgeons a three-dimensional view and ultra-precise control that surpasses the capabilities of the human hand.”
He noted that robotic surgery represents the pinnacle of modern surgical practice, allowing access to deep and complex areas of the body with high precision and minimal invasiveness. The technology reduces incision size, minimizes blood loss, accelerates recovery, enhances safety, and lowers the risk of complications.
Dr. Al Hooti added that the hospital is moving confidently toward expanding the use of robotic surgery to other specialties, including colorectal, obstetrics and gynecology, hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal, and cardiothoracic surgery. He emphasized that the Ministry of Health is committed to training and empowering national medical talent to ensure Oman becomes a leading regional hub for advanced robotic surgery.
This achievement, he said, embodies the goals of Oman Vision 2040 in developing an innovative, technology-driven healthcare sector and reinforces the Sultanate’s standing as a regional leader in digital surgery and robotic medicine.
The medical team supervising the procedure confirmed that the robotic system demonstrated superior accuracy and control compared to traditional methods, with fewer complications and faster patient recovery times.
The intelligent surgical platform operates through advanced robotic arms controlled by the surgeon via a console that provides a magnified 3D view of the surgical site, granting unprecedented precision and maneuverability.
The use of this technology has yielded numerous benefits, including reduced intraoperative bleeding, shorter hospital stays, higher success rates for complex procedures, and quicker patient rehabilitation.
This milestone marks a new chapter in Oman’s medical journey, reaffirming the Sultanate’s position among the first nations in the region to embrace smart medical solutions — and underscoring its belief that the Omani individual remains the cornerstone of progress and the architect of the future.
