In a moment that encapsulates the future of medicine and showcases Gulf cooperation at its finest, the Royal Hospital has achieved an unprecedented medical milestone. In collaboration with the Sabah Al-Ahmad Urology Center in Kuwait, the hospital successfully carried out the first remote urological surgery using advanced robotic technology.
This groundbreaking step marks Oman’s entry into a new era of smart surgery, positioning the country at the forefront of smart medical innovation to enhance patient care and improve healthcare quality.
The operation stood out as a joint Gulf achievement. The robotic system enabled surgical teams in Muscat and Kuwait to work in complete harmony through a secure, high-speed communication platform. This setup allowed real-time control of surgical instruments and provided high-definition, three-dimensional visualization, significantly boosting safety, reducing the need for invasive intervention, and speeding up the patient’s recovery.
Dr. Qais Al-Hooti, Consultant and Head of the Urology Department at RH, stated that today marks a milestone for the institution as it celebrates the successful completion of the first remote surgery performed using a robotic system between Oman—represented by the Royal Hospital—and Kuwait.
Dr. Saad Al-Dousari, Consultant Urologist and Head of the Surgery Department at (SAUC), described the day as a historic milestone for Gulf cooperation. He noted that between 2014 and 2025, the center performed around 2,000 robotic surgeries, including procedures for prostate, kidney, and urinary tract tumors.
He emphasized that the partnership between Oman and Kuwait is a strategic one, adding that this latest operation carries significant strategic weight—surpassing previous procedures—and aligns with the visions of both countries.
This success further strengthens the Royal Hospital’s pioneering role in adopting smart medical technologies and advancing complex surgical systems. It reflects the Ministry of Health’s commitment to digital transformation and aligns with Oman Vision 2040, which emphasizes innovation and the empowerment of national talent.
The collaboration between Oman and Kuwait also serves as a model for Gulf integration in knowledge exchange and remote robotic surgery. It opens the door for expanding such procedures to other specialties while enhancing clinical training and capacity-building in digital medicine and smart surgery.
