Sultanate Affirms Commitment to COP26 Goals in Health

Represented by the Ministry of Health, the Sultanate affirmed its full commitment to taking the necessary measures to strengthen the health system; making it more resilient to climate change and more environmentally sustainable.
This was declared in a recorded statement by H.E. Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al-Saidi, Minister of Health, in line with 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, UK, which is being held between 31 October and 12 November 2021.
The two-week program of COP26 has allocated the 6th and 7th of November to highlight climate change linkage to health aspect.
The statement pointed out that the Sultanate will work to achieve several goals within a defined time frame to strength the health system and make it more sustainable and resilient to climate change, in addition to reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions, including related supply chains.
An assessment was conducted at the level of health institutions to measure their adaptive capacity and resilience to climate change by 2023. Accordingly, a national plan for adaptation to climate change in health by 2024 will be established, as part of the National Plan for Adaptation to the Impacts of Climate Change.
Other objectives included utilizing the assessment and the national plan for adaptation in health to climate change to mobilize the finance for the development of the health system in line with the principles of sustainability and environment respect;in addition to assessing greenhouse gas emissions associated with the health system (including supply chains) based on baseline indicators by 2030.
Furthermore, an action plan was established to develop an environmentally friendly health system with low greenhouse emissions, including supply chains, air pollution and human exposure, and the role of the health sector in reducing pollution.
