Travel medicine is considered one of the most important requirements at the present time and one of the future pillars of health services for any country, in light of the increase in travel rates worldwide, where some countries are witnessing the spread of infectious diseases, epidemics and outbreaks. In response to the call of the World Health Organization and international and regional organizations to limit the spread of diseases and epidemics by avoiding their transmission through travelers, an integrated travel medicine service become crucial. With the aim of enhancing national health security by preventing any imported infectious diseases or outbreaks associated with the travel of Omanis or expatriates within or outside the Sultanate. This service will provide guidance, preventive and curative services to travelers before travelling, during travel and after returning from travel, including communicable and non-communicable diseases. The introduction of a travel medicine service in the Sultanate of Oman began in 2014 through the presence of international specialists in travel medicine on an advisory mission to the Sultanate. Later the Oman Travel Medicine Conference, which was held from 14 to 15 February 2015, emphasized the need to develop a practical strategy to serve travel medicine in the Sultanate with the importance of raising awareness among citizens and residents of travel medicine services. In September 2019, the travel medicine service was launched in primary health care institutions in the Sultanate. This link aims to raise awareness of service providers in the health sector on travel-related diseases with the aim of taking the necessary measures to avoid and treat them. Additionally to raise community awareness of the need to visit health institutions in various governorates, before traveling to any country, to find out what diseases and epidemics spread there, and what are the methods of prevention e.g. Treatment or vaccination to take before heading to their destination. Moreover stressing the travelers of the need to visit the health institutions once they feel any symptoms after returning from travel.
