The National Heart Center of the Royal Hospital has achieved a new medical milestone by implanting the first-of-its-kind precise sensor in the country, "CardioMEMS," to monitor heart failure patients remotely.
This achievement was made possible by the high national expertise and competencies that distinguish Omani health cadres, through a specialized medical team comprising Dr. A’ref Al Balushi, Consultant Cardiologist specializing in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology at RH, and Dr. Amna Al Busaidi, Consultant Cardiologist specializing in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology at RH and Chairperson of the National Committee for Heart Transplantation. The team demonstrated high precision in performing these delicate operations according to the highest international medical standards, reflecting the advanced technical capabilities and dedicated health cadres in providing the best levels of healthcare for patients.
This success represents a qualitative turning point in advanced heart care protocols within the Sultanate of Oman, and a tangible transition towards applying "predictive medicine" concepts, which prioritize human health and comfort. This sensor allows the pulmonary artery pressure to be measured directly via cardiac catheterization without the need for open-heart surgery, thereby reducing medical risks and giving patients the opportunity to practice their normal lives with complete reassurance.
The clinical and humanitarian importance of this device lies in its ability to provide a continuous and proactive monitoring system. It sends daily precise readings of pulmonary artery pressure and blood pressure levels directly to the medical team, without burdening the patient and their family with the hardship of travel and repeated hospital visits. This allows the medical staff to detect any early health deterioration through monitoring pressure indicators and fluid retention weeks before the appearance of clinical symptoms. This enables the modification of treatment plans and precise adjustment of medication doses with immediate responsiveness tailored to each patient's condition.
This medical innovation contributes directly to reducing emergency admissions and repeated visits to emergency departments, ensuring the stability of the patient's health condition and improving their quality of life and that of their families.
Regarding this achievement, Dr. Najeeb Al Rawahi, Director of RH’s National Heart Center, confirmed that the introduction of this advanced technology embodies the Center's enduring commitment to keeping pace with the latest global innovations and the shift towards predictive care based on data. He praised the competence of the medical team and their sincere efforts in elevating the level of specialized services in the Sultanate of Oman.
