Meeting Highlights Organ Transplantation in Oman
H.E. Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Saidi, Minister of Health met today (Monday) organ transplantation experts from the World Health Organization, with the presence of MOH’s Undersecretaries and number of Ministry senior officials.
The Health Minister pointed out in the meeting to the blessings of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to establish a National Centre for Organ Transplantation, which will work on developing the National Transplantation Program.
The meeting touched upon the significance of cooperation with the WHO toward developing the national program for Organ Transplantation, with particular regard to qualifying human cadre. The meeting stressed the importance of multi-sectorial cooperation for the success of the program taking into consideration the Ministry’s orientation towards developing a post-mortem organ donation system to serve greater number of organ failure patients.
Moreover, one of WHO expert gave a presentation where he explained the importance of completing all required procedures to launch the post-mortem organ donation program, which would contribute in saving lives of organ failure patients and reducing current costs of the dialysis.
It should be noted that there are more than 2200 patients suffering from kidney failure and are on a regular dialysis. The availability of organs can save their lives through transplant.
Notably, once the National Transplantation Program is activated, liver transplants surgeries will be completely performed in the Sultanate without the need for sending many patients abroad for such surgeries.
